Kat Dennings’ arc in WandaVision will not be the last we see of Darcy Lewis in the MCU, but fans shouldn’t expect to see her in Thor: Love & Thunder.
During a recent interview, Kat Dennings revealed that she has filmed other projects for Marvel that do not include the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder. In 2011, Dennings made her first appearance in the MCU as Darcy Lewis, the assistant to astrophysicist Dr. Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), in the original Thor. While Dennings reprised her role in Thor: The Dark World, she was absent in subsequent Avengers movies. However, her character has newly re-emerged in WandaVision.
In the fourth episode of WandaVision, Darcy Lewis returned after being recruited by S.W.O.R.D., the Sentient Weapon Observation and Response Department, to assess the bizarre anomalies occurring in Westview, where Wanda and Vision are currently residing as a married couple. Now a well-respected scientist with a PhD, Lewis teamed up with Agent Jimmy Woo (Randall Park) to investigate the confusing irregularities within the suburban town. Lewis’s arrival has sparked questions about whether or not she will be involved in other MCU stories.
While speaking with Extra, Dennings shared that she has indeed been a part of yet-to-be-released Marvel undertakings: “There are some things I’ve done for Marvel that are coming out that are not this…But I probably can’t say.” Although she couldn’t provide details about these future “things,” she did note that she probably would not be appearing in Thor 4.
While Dennings may not be swapping one-liners with Chris Hemsworth, her character has magnified the scope of WandaVision, acting as the entry point through which viewers can slowly learn more about the mysterious objectives of S.W.O.R.D. In the past few episodes, Lewis has spent much of her time with Agent Woo, who first arrived onscreen in Ant-Man and the Wasp as the FBI officer supervising Scott Lang’s (Paul Rudd) house arrest. Their rapport has delighted both viewers and critics, inspiring calls for a Marvel spinoff featuring the two in an X-Files-style mystery show where they can explore different extraterrestrial disturbances related to the multiverse.
Although Dennings cannot reveal anything about her other possible story arcs in the MCU, her confirmation that she will reprise her role as Lewis is an exciting development. Both she and Park have added a delightful, witty component to WandaVision. The duo has re-invigorated the greater plot surrounding the apparent glitches in reality taking place in Westview. Wise-cracking Lewis and serious Woo succeed as narrative foils to each other, effectively working as a comedic duo that adds both levity and intrigue to the Marvel show. It will be interesting to see what Dennings does with Lewis in her forthcoming projects, even if she doesn’t come back in Thor: Love and Thunder.
